Workshops & Groups

ART GROUPS

Our Groups have been put on hold due to the COVID restrictions.

The Center for the Arts sponsors a variety of offerings that engage community members in creative activities. Groups meet weekly without formal instruction; monies are collected to cover costs of room rental and maintenance.

Acrylic and Watercolor Painting Group • Meets in Classroom #12 on Tuesday mornings, 9:00 - noon. This group may not meet during holidays or summer vacation periods. Contact Nancy Warwick prior to attending.  beangramma@aol.com or 805-927-0756

Life Drawing Group • Drawing/painting the undraped figure. Meets in the workroom off the CCA Gallery on alternate Monday mornings, 9 - noon. Contact Tom Gould at 805-924-1754

Wednesday Irregulars • An informal plein aire group that meets every Wednesday (weather permitting). The location for the next meeting is usually discussed the week before. An email is then sent to everyone on the mailing list. Contact Holly McCain at holly@supersleeper.com to be added to the mailing list if you're interested in joining this fun group of artists. There are no fees or instructions, but the group does meet at noon to show off the work they've created and get feedback (bring a lunch).

From Outside Into the Studio

November 2021
Monday - Wednesday
9:00am - 4:00pm
Price: $395 (members receive a discount). Please send a deposit of $100 to hold your spot.

Note: This workshop will take place outdoors with time in the classroom on the last day for critique only.

This workshop is geared toward all levels of artists who are striving to bring their work up to a new level. We will spend three days painting on location in one of Cambria’s exceptionally beautiful places, painting from life en plein air. Laurie will observe the artists’ works and help them to improve rather than change their individual styles.

The emphasis will be on learning to see value changes, color temperatures, and composition. We will be building arrangements of abstract shapes that will form a strong foundation for the painting. There will be studies on the special nuances that will make the students’ paintings “sing” and vibrate with evocative color. Additional paintings will be completed using photo references brought to class by the students that were taken outdoors on location.

Laurie will be giving short lectures and demos each morning. The remainder of the day will be spent painting and she will be working with artists on an individual basis.

Instruction will be with oils, however all mediums are welcome.

I will post a list of equipment and materials on my website under the workshop.
