Proud, Hopeful, Patient

Story by Marcia Rhoades

As the moon’s frosty glow peeks over the mountain tops, I ponder my reflection in our small lily pond. I am amazed at how much weariness I see in my eyes. Just a few years ago, they sparkled with the joy of family and friends. Now I look as exhausted and concerned as I feel.

I can also see the toll our new life in the mountains has taken on my parents. In the beginning, we were all encouraging each other to be patient until this passes, but they have become even less able to visualize a gentler future than I am. In the twilight of their lives, all they want is peace and the ability to leave the mountains to return to their home in town.

Since the beginning, I have realized how lucky my family and I are to have this secluded cottage to escape to during the endless fighting. My husband was called to serve early in the war and has thus far survived. We are grateful to see him on the rare occasions when he can get up here for a few days. I never have a moment without worry for him, for the other soldiers fighting on so many fronts, and for our fellow countrymen who, unlike us, cannot escape the effects of the bombings.

Even from this distance, we can see the explosions that light up the night sky over the city below, a constant reminder of what we all willingly sacrifice for our country. I hope my parents will live to see the end of the war and the beginning of a return to normalcy. In the meantime, we are proud, hopeful, patient Ukrainians.
