Story by Susan Chase

One late afternoon, she felt compelled to walk to the ocean. She clambered up a rocky outcropping and sat. The cold wind whipped her hair. A gloomy feeling engulfed her. She flashed back to a different beach, years before.

They had met on the San Diego coast, where she’d moved for a creative writing program. He was in a lifeguard jeep, she was lying on a beach blanket, her nose in a book. She cast sideways glances and liked what she saw. He was fit and tan, with sandy colored hair. Soon he was standing next to her, espousing about rip currents, while scanning the people in the ocean.

Quickly, they enmeshed their disparate lives. Their first kiss happened while gazing upon a sunset. He proposed. She accepted. Shortly before the wedding, she panicked. She loaded her car, and headed north. She found a cabin in a small coastal town, and settled in.

A few years ago, she found him on Facebook. A photo showed his wife and him, on a beach, smiling, arm in arm. For a few moments, she pondered about if she’d stayed. Would he have grown to love reading, art, cats? Could she have learned to surf?

She was happy with her choice and writerly life. Still, there were moments like now, when it’d be nice to be held in a warm embrace. She watched the waning sunset colors. It’s alluring, she thought, but I’m content with morning sun salutations in the garden. She stood up and walked home.
